INTRODUCTION 1. PURPOSE The DUTTON-ZACHARIAH-L Mailing List is an online e-mail forum for the discussion and research of the genealogy of Zachariah Dutton (c.1755-1829), a Maryland Revolutionary patriot who removed to North Carolina. This includes his descendants and their genealogies, as well as his ancestors. (We can only hope!) All descendants of Zachariah are invited to join and share, as well as anyone who thinks they might have a link to him, or who simply has an interest in the family. While the primary function of this group is genealogy and research, I have always stressed that we remember why we are here: we are a family; we share a common bond and have common blood. We are more than colleagues; we are cousins, and ought to care and share on a level that goes deeper than the intellectual function of this group. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ C. GUIDELINES DUTTON-ZACHARIAH is not meant to be a rigid list; nor do I mean to be a rigid list-owner (I've known many who are.) So there are only a handful of common-sense guidelines which I will post; I would like for everyone to do their best to follow them. 1. RootsWeb Policy: This list is graciously hosted by the RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative, which technically has a "no commercial use" policy. Like other RootsWeb policies, however they last thing we want is for policy to get in the way of doing genealogy. Therefore, DUTTON-ZACHARIAH will accept brief announcements of upcoming books, services, or other resource material which is specifically related to our Dutton family or affiliated families, or to counties or regions into which our families tie in. Do not include prices or ordering information in your post to the list; just include a URL or pointer to a web site, commercial mailing list, or e-mail address at which complete information can be obtained. When in doubt as to whether it is appropriate, e-mail me at DUTTON-ZACHARIAH-admin@rootsweb.com. 2. Subject Matter - When posting to the list, please stay within the bounds of the defined subject: family. Acceptable topics include: * Queries about branches of the family or specific persons * Answers to queries, or forwarded queries from other lists * Family data, including (but not limited to) ancestor lists, descendant lists, Bible records, cemetery records birth & death records, brief biographies, etc. (charts are okay as long as they don't look too tacky) * Requests for data look-ups * Personal reminisces and memories of family members, places, reunions, or personal reflections on your Dutton family and what they mean to you * Personal information about yourself and your family; we want to get to know you! Use your own discretion; I'm sure I'm leaving out a lot of topics, but if you think it fits in, by all means, post. On the other hand, if you're in doubt, then you probably shouldn't-- remember that whatever you post will be read by twenty or more people. If it doesn't pertain to the family, and there's a chance that someone won't be interested at all, you may be straying off-topic. Please e-mail me when in doubt. The following topics are unacceptable under any circumstance: politics and political views, derogatory jokes (towards any group), gossip and personal chatter (this doesn't include our "keeping in touch" correspondence), chain letters, silly, useless, and pointless, or annoying forwards. And of course, by no means, any copyrighted material. 3. Subject Lines - Please include some sort of informative information in the Subject line of your post, for example: "Stephen Penn Dutton Grave Found" (we can only hope!) as opposed to "Dutton information". 4. Attachments - RootsWeb does not allow file attachments in their mailing lists. This is for your protection against viruses, and to make the mail flow more smoothly, especially for those with slower Internet connections. If you have a file that you'd like to share, send it to me, and I'll put it on the website, or make an announcement, and then send the file privately to those who are interested. 5. Viruses - Since RootsWeb does not allow file attachments, you will NEVER receive a virus over the mailing list. Many viruses have the ability to disguise themselves to appear to be from someone in your address book. Viruses generally come from someone else who has you listed in their address book. If you receive a suspicious e-mail containing a file attachment, claiming to be from the list, you should delete it immediately, or forward it to me, if you're not sure. There's no need to panic. 6. Initial Post - If you're a new member (or even if you're an old member) I would like for everyone to post a message introducing themselves and their connection to the family. We're all new members again. Also, it would be welcome and quite useful if everyone would re-post their introduction every month or so, along with any updates and new information, for any new members that may have arrived. I can't think of anything else right now. Can anyone else think of anything else? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ D. TECHNICAL STUFF 1. TWO VERSIONS TO CHOOSE FROM: DUTTON-ZACHARIAH-L is for individual messages to be delivered to your e-mail address. As each subscriber to the list sends messages to the list address, you will receive a copy of the message. To subscribe send an e-mail message to: DUTTON-ZACHARIAH-L-request@rootsweb.com with one word in the body of the message: subscribe DUTTON-ZACHARIAH-D is for a digest of several accumulated messages to be delivered to your email address. As each subscriber to the list sends messages to the list address, they are put into a digest to be delivered later. The digest is generated approximately once a day and delivered to digest subscribers. This option is handy for people who don't want multiple messages to accumulate in their mail box. To subscribe send an email message to: DUTTON-ZACHARIAH-D-request@rootsweb.com with one word in the body of the message: subscribe 2. E-MAIL ADDRESSES TO USE: There are two separate e-mail addresses to use in order to participate in this list: a. To send MESSAGES to ALL subscribers on either version of the list use: DUTTON-ZACHARIAH-L@rootsweb.com b. To send COMMANDS to the computer & SmartList software that run this list use: DUTTON-ZACHARIAH-L-request@rootsweb.com 3. SENDING COMMANDS TO SMARTLIST & ROOTSWEB: To subscribe, unsubscribe or make other changes to your mailing list subscription, you will send "commands" to the computer & the SmartList software on RootsWeb, using the below addresses: DUTTON-ZACHARIAH-L-request@rootsweb.com (for individual messages) DUTTON-ZACHARIAH-D-request@rootsweb.com (for a digest of multiple messages) a. To manage your subscription, send an e-mail message to the address above and use any of the following commands, typed within the body of your e-mail message. Type ONLY one of the commands as it is shown below. Do not add any extra words or lines of text: subscribe unsubscribe get welcome.txt (** When using the "get" command, be sure to include one word in the subject line: archive ) b. Do NOT use a signature file attached to the e-mail message. The software reads your message and tries to answer each command it finds. When it runs across your signature file it gets a bit confused and will send you a message stating something like 'Do not recognize command 'Jones'. Do not recognize command "Smith", etc. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ E. WEB SITE I've uploaded a web site which gives a rough outline of the first four generations of the Zachariah Dutton family. I plan to make other resources available here, as well. http://www.zdutton.org/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Any questions, comments, complaints, compliments? Feel free to e-mail me about anything. Thanks; I look forward to hearing from you. WELCOME TO THE FAMILY! Good Luck & Have Fun!
