The DUTTON-ZACHARIAH Mailing List is an online e-mail forum for the discussion and research of the genealogy of Zachariah Dutton (ca.1755 - 1829), a Maryland Revolutionary patriot who removed to North Carolina. This includes his descendants and their genealogies, as well as his ancestors (we can only hope!). All descendants of Zachariah are invited to join and share, as well as anyone who thinks they might have a link to him, or who simply has an interest in the family.
The list was founded in June 1998 with fifteen members, and moved to RootsWeb in July 1999. As of July 2003, it had over forty members.
All messages that pass over the list are archived and searchable, and contain a wealth of data. The messages from the original list (now known as the Old List) are stored in a separate searchable archive.
The list has been pretty quiet lately, but we're always looking for new cousins. If you think you're kin, come on and join the family.
Like other RootsWeb lists, the mailing list comes in two formats: mail mode and digest mode. Mail mode consists of individual messages being sent to your address every time someone posts. Digest mode combines several messages over a period of about a day, and sends them all as one e-mail. Digest mode is particularly useful when list traffic is high, but since it's been so low lately, I would recommend mail mode.
For more information about the list and its guidelines, read the welcome message.
Using the list is simple. All you have to do is subscribe to the list, and you'll begin receiving mailings from the list. Whenever a member sends a message to the list, you'll receive it.
To send a message to the list, just address your e-mail to DUTTON-ZACHARIAH@rootsweb.com. Everyone on the list will receive it. You must be a subscriber to send a message to the list.
If you're not familiar with the way RootsWeb mailing lists work, RootsWeb provides the following links to FAQs about mailing lists, subscribing and unsubscribing, and other subscriber questions:
I'm also available to answer any questions.
Here's a quick and painless way to subscribe to the mailing list, providing your mail software does what I'm assuming it will do. If you try this, and it doesn't work, please let me know.
Note: These links should launch a new e-mail window already addressed to the request address, with "subscribe" in the body of the message. If you open the message, and it doesn't look complete, you may have to complete it yourself. Just send an e-mail to DUTTON-ZACHARIAH-L-request@rootsweb.com (for mail mode) or DUTTON-ZACHARIAH-D-request@rootsweb.com (for digest mode), and put one word in the body of the message: subscribe.
If you have subscribed successfully, you should receive a welcome message.
If you have any problems or questions, feel free to e-mail me.
We would love to have you stay, but if you need to leave the mailing list, the process is similar to that of subscribing.

Every message that passes over the mailing list is archived, and those archives are available for anyone to search. Often, a lot of valuable information can be obtained by new list members by searching the list archives for their particular connection or interest.
The archive at RootsWeb covers dates from July 1999 to the present. A separate archive on this site covers the first year of the list, from June 1998 to August 1999.
