Subject: Descendants of Zachariah & Mary E. Dutton
Date: 1998-09-01 01:21:26
James and Margaret: That trail you are on sounds very promising. Hope
something comes of it. Nothing so exciting as finding a real connection!!!
For those interested :
The information that I have of Zachariah Dutton, son of Jarrett Gerrard
Dutton is only about his descendants. Joseph was the one who made the
link of this Dutton to Jarrett Gerrard. Zachariah is found in the 1850
census in the household of James Dutton (son of John, gs of Zachariah,
Sr.) He was shown then to be age 30. Whether he had a previous
marriage or what he was doing from the time he reached adulthood
is not in the oral or formal family history of the descendant that I have
been corresponding with, Alice Dutton Freeman, 47 Luther Dutton Rd.,
Jasper, AL 35504. Their family oral history is of his early family history
with Mary Emily Rushing(s) (I have an -s on the name in my files, hope
that is correct) whom he apparently married shortly after that 1850
census as their oldest known daughter was born in 1852. I am sure that
in that 1850 census, he was listed as an inmate - not sure what that
designation was referring to. Josephs records say that Zachariah came
to Walker County to live with James about 1835. I dont know how he
arrived at this fact; perhaps that was the year that his mother died and
the family were split up. I do not believe Zachariah is listed with James
in the 1840 census, but he would have been about 20 years old by this
time and could have been on his own.
Alice sent me this descendants information, which is not enlightning
about finding more roots, but maybe it can serve to establish ties to other
Dutton families who lived after his time.
The information that I have is as follows:
Zachariah Dutton, b. ca 1820-21 and died March or April, 1864 in Hood
Hospital, Covington, Newton County, GA while serving with the CSA
in the Civil War, Co. L 28th AL Infantry (one civil war source had him 26th
AL Infantry, but other had 28th and the other Duttons who served from
Walker Co. were in the 28th.) The Civil War Descendants Society in
Athens, AL wrote me. . .Zachariah Dutton enlisted in Jasper (county
seat of Walker County, Alabama. He died in Hood Hospital, Covington,
Georgia circa March-April 1854. his widow Mary E. (according to
Alabama Confederate pension records) filed for a pension a few
years after the war.
Married:
Mary Emily Rushings, daughter of Elijah and Evelyn Rushings. She is
buried at Williams Chapel Cemetery near Jasper, Walker Co., AL
Zachariah and Mary Emily (Rushings) Dutton had at least four children.
Alice thinks there was a fifth named something like Amanda or Amada
that died as a child before the family moved away from Dutton Hill and
is buried at Dutton Hill Cemetery in one of the unmarked graves. Her
birth order is not known. I think her great aunt, one of Zachariahs
daughters told her this when Alice was child and she was telling her
stories of having lived at Dutton Hill and the war times.
After Zachariah did not return from the Civil War, Mary Emily
moved their family nearer to her birth family in the northeastern
part of Walker County. That distance in those days was enough to
isolate contact with other relatives as is evidenced by the fact that
the present day Duttons in the Jasper area of Walker County assured
me that these Duttons were not kin to us.
The known children of Zachariah and Mary Emily, all born at Dutton Hill
in Walker Co., AL are:
1. Sara Edna Dutton (May 1852 - Aug. 1922) who married Jeff
Burrow (1842 - 6 Dec 1888)
2. Eliza Jane Dutton (2 Oct 1855 - 6 Jan 1940) who on 12 Oct
1871 married Jacob Daily Lindsey (11 May 1850- 4 May 1929) .
She was 11 years old when the Civil War ended and told Alice
the stories I have sent.
3. George W. Dutton (1858 - ), married Nancy J. Beddingfield
in Walker Co., AL on 28 Dec. 1884. Their marriage is recorded
at Walker County Court House in Jasper in Book B., p. 77. They
were married at the home of William Beddingfield, bond signed
by G. W. Dutton and J. R. Rushings.
(Note: I have a note in my research that my cousin, Luella
of Chattanooga said that our Walker Co. cousin Geraldean
Dutton Mote had spoken with someone named Edna Brown,
age about 69-70 said that her mothers 2nd marriage was to
George W. Dutton, buried at Mt. Jay. Her mothers last
name was Nickelson and she was in Norville Duttons family.
We show no George W. with a marriage to anyone named
Nickelson. Maybe this will ring a bell for someone else. We
do have a Norville somewhere. Later I will check and see
where he fits.)
4. Simeon B. Dutton (27 Sep 1860 - 12 Dec 1905) Married Dicie
Adline Stewart (27 Jun 1874 - 26 Apr 1964)in 1899 at the home

born in TN, fathers birthplace unknown. With her is listed George W.,
age 21 and Simeon B., age 20 , father born in AL, both sons born in AL
and mother born in TN.

with his grandparents. His wife, Bertha Bailey is the
daughter of John Bailey and Roxie Allred Bailey. Her sister
Mammer Elizabeth Bailey was married to Luthers brother,
Manly Dutton. Their children were, thus, double cousins.
Luther lived all his life in Walker County. The road on which
his widow and his daughter, Alice Dutton Freeman, live side
by side, is named for him.

There are numerous later descendants in the Simeon B. Dutton
family file that have births up to the middle 1990's. I am not sure that any-
one is interested in that detail. If anyone is, let me know. I can get the
computer to do a descendants list just for his family and forward it on.
Hope this is helpful to the two who descend from this family.....or anyone
else interested in all the Dutton details they can get.
I probably won't be doing much on the net for the next two days as I
am scheduled for some lovely medical tests that will likely leave me feeling
like a slug most of the next two days, but I'll be back to normal after that.
Good night, Cousin Eula
