Welcome to the Zachariah Dutton Genealogy Web, a genealogy web site dedicated to furthering the family history of Zachariah Dutton (ca.1750–1829), a Maryland Revolutionary patriot who moved to North Carolina. The descendants of Zachariah's ten children are now spread across the globe, but they originally resided primarily in the American South. Six of Zachariah's eight sons made their homes in Northern Alabama; the remainder of the children are all believed to have remained in North Carolina. Over several generations, the family spread throughout the Southern states, in particular the Carolinas, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma.
This site is the online residence of the Zachariah Dutton Genealogy Mailing List. With over thirty members, we have steadily and cooperatively chipped away at the mysteries of Zachariah's family, and have made unbelievable progress. The data presented on these pages comes as the result of a lot of hard work from a lot of hard-working people. I am little more than a compiler—without the contributions of each of you, this presentation would not be possible.
The purpose of this site is to provide a base for discussion on the list. Hopefully, it will keep us from having to explain who Zachariah Dutton was and list all of his children every month—which we don't do; but we've had so many new members, it might have been a good idea.
I've included a rough framework of the first four generations of Zachariah's descendants, which should give enough information for any new members to get their bearings, and hopefully, will attract other descendants of Zachariah Dutton who may not yet know that he is their ancestor.
I am taking submissions for resources to be posted on the site, such as census records, marriage records, court records, cemetery transcriptions, and hopefully even photographs. Anything you would like to submit, I'll be delighted to post, so let me know.
I would genuinely love to hear from you. Please, all of you, if you have any comments, questions, suggestions, complaints or congratulations, don't hesitate to send them my way. This site is for you; I want your feedback, in order to make it better. You can e-mail me at jtr@zdutton.org.
