NOTE: The names “Jarrard” and “Jarrett” were used interchangeably, and the two were never used together. The spelling of these names also differed from record to record:
- The spelling “Jerrod” is used in his War of 1812 service record, which also bears the note: “This is to certify Jerrod Dutton as mustered is the same as Garret Dutton, who gave me power of attorney & the difference is only in spelling the name. At Huntsville Miss. 22d Apr. 1820 —Jos. Acklen.”
- The spelling “Gerard” is used in the estate proceedings of Alexander Dutton in 1818.
- The spelling “Jarrard” is used on his marriage record in 1820, and on the 1820 census of Limestone County, Alabama.
- The spelling “Jarrott” is used in the will of Zachariah Dutton in 1829.
- The spelling “Jarratt” is used on the 1830 census of Lawrence County, Alabama.
- The spelling “Jarrett” has been used by descendants.
