NOTE: The names “Jarrard” and “Jarrett” were used interchangeably, and the two were never used together. The spelling of these names also differed from record to record:

  • The spelling “Jerrod” is used in his War of 1812 service record, which also bears the note: “This is to certify Jerrod Dutton as mustered is the same as Garret Dutton, who gave me power of attorney & the difference is only in spelling the name. At Huntsville Miss. 22d Apr. 1820 —Jos. Acklen.”
  • The spelling “Gerard” is used in the estate proceedings of Alexander Dutton in 1818.
  • The spelling “Jarrard” is used on his marriage record in 1820, and on the 1820 census of Limestone County, Alabama.
  • The spelling “Jarrott” is used in the will of Zachariah Dutton in 1829.
  • The spelling “Jarratt” is used on the 1830 census of Lawrence County, Alabama.
  • The spelling “Jarrett” has been used by descendants.

Charity McDonald

  • Born before 1799.
  • Died after 1830 in Lawrence County or Walker County, Alabama.

  1. Zachariah Dutton, born ca. 1821 in Lawrence County, Alabama, died Feb 1864 in Georgia in service of Confederate States Army; married ca. 1851 in Walker County, Alabama to Mary Emily Rushing.
  2. Mary Permelia Dutton, born 1824 in Lawrence County, Alabama, died 28 Aug 1886 in Itawamba County, Mississippi; married 1842 in Lawrence County, Alabama to John Burnside Brown.
  3. William Dutton, born ca. 1824 in Lawrence County, Alabama, died after 1893 in Marion County or Walker County, Alabama; married ca. 1853 in Walker County, Alabama to Martha McDonald.
  4. Levi Dutton, born ca. 1825 in Lawrence County, Alabama, died ca. 1870 in Cherokee County, Texas; married 9 Jan 1851 in Cherokee County, Texas to Nancy Allen.

  1. I believe it’s Charity McDaniel. James Alexander Dutton also had a daughter named Charite Dutton – middle name was Jane. She drowned in the YMCA swimming pool in Dallas, TX at 28. She was a school teacher at North Dallas High School and was unmarried. She was my grandmother’s aunt.
