Everybody,
I' m done with supper and ready to continue on with what I have on GA
Duttons.
1850 DADE COUNTY, GA CENSUS
       Patrick Dutton-----38-----farmer-----born in SC
       Ellindor Dutton---30------born in SC
       Ephram Dutton---16---born in TN
       James Dutton-----12---born in TN
       John Dutton------10----born in TN
       Wiley Dutton----8-----born in TN
       Rebecca Dutton----6-----born in TN
       Oscly Dutton--female----born in TN
       Mary Dutton----3------born in AL
Clayton Dutton, 10 months, born in GA
Patrick Dutton was living in TN by 1834 and shows up on the Franklin County,
TN 1840 census. In 1847, he moved to AL, and by 1850, he was in GA. By 1860,
he is on the Sumner County, TN census. On this 1860 census, Patrick and
Ellindor have
had another child of their own, Marion, 10, but have also picked up a
relative's child
as they now have a female. named Arritta? , 15 years old with them. They were
probably moving around alot as they were part Indian and maybe were not
accepted
in some places. They all were listed as white on the 1840, 1850, and 1860
censuses.

1850 DADE COUNTY, GA CENSUS
       Thomas Dutton-----28----farmer-----born in SC
Mary Dutton--------60-----born in SC (probably his mother)
       Rebecca Dutton----24----born in SC
       Elisare Dutton------22----born in SC
Chesley Dutton----14----born in SC(he is the son of the above Rebecca)
Silas Benton Dutton---6----born in TN, along Crow Creek
This Silas Benton Dutton is the son of Louise E. Dutton, who died in
1846, and
is a sister to Patrick, Thomas, Wiley J., Rebecca, and Elisare.
The Wiley J. Dutton that is a brother to these Duttons is on the Conway
County,
AR, Lick Mountain Township in 1850, age 42, with his wife, Evaline Rose
Dutton
22, born in TN, and their children Asbury, male, 5, born in TN,Franklin
County,
Elizabeth, 3, born in TN, and Franklin, 1, born in TN.
These are my Duttons. The name Benton is used often as a middle name
for
the males. I used to think that Silas Benton was born in AL on Crow
Creek in
Jackson County, AL, but his death certificate says he was born in TN.
When
I visited the town of Benton, TN, on this vacation, I noticed that
there is also a
Crow Creek there. Nancy Ward, the beloved mother of the Cherokee, is
buried
there, as is her son 5 Killer, and I am thinking now that maybe this is
where
Silas Benton was born. Family says that Silas was named Benton for the
place
where he was born. It also makes sense to me since this trip as NW SC,
the
backwoods area by Abbeville, SC, the 96th District, and Elbert County, GA are
all
close to Benton, TN. We drove that way. It was an area by the Tellico Block
House
where many Cherokee died as they were kept prisoners while they were waiting
to be sent to OK on the Trail of Tears. Grandma Dutton said that Silas
Benton's mother was 1/2 Cherokee and that these Duttons were linked with the
Eastern Band of the Cherokee but did not go to live with them in NC after the
Trail of Tears. Cannot
find them on any Cherokee rolls. All the above were listed as white on the
census.
Don't know who Chesley's father is or if Rebecca was married at all. Also, I
know
that Silas Benton's father was a Cumberland Presbyterian Circuit Rider
Englishman
by the name of Archibald Sutherland. He had a wife and family in Cannon
County, TN. Louise E. is said to have died of a broken heart when Silas left
her and returned
to his other family. She died when Silas Benton was 2. Rebcca Dutton raised
him
along with her son, Chesley, in Sewanee, Franklin County, TN.

1860 DADE COUNTY, GA CENSUS, Trenton, Post Office
Thomas Dutton----35-----farm laborer, MULATTO---BORN IN SC
       Mary E. Dutton----21------born in SC
       Malitha Ann Dutton---9---MULATTO-------born in GA
This is the same Thomas Dutton in the 1850 Dade County, GA census that is
listed as white on that one. Dade County, GA is a remote area and its people
were
isolated in this hilly area with many streams. It is possible that my Duttons
may
have traveled from SC over the Blue Ride Mountains to live in that SE part of
TN
before moving on to DeKalb, AL, and then on to GA.

Susie, did not get to do the 1860 census as someone else had the index
book.
Also ran out of time. But I did check out the 1870 Bibb County one for you.

1870 BIBB COUNTY, GA CENSUS
Macon County Post Office
       Wiley J. Dutton-----30----farmer---$500.00--born in GA--can't read or
write
       Lavina Dutton-------27------keeps house----born in GA
       Ophelia R. Dutton-----3-----born in GA
       Benjamin H. Dutton----1----born in GA
All of these Duttons are listed as white.
But next door to them, all the people in it are listed as black.
       Robert Thurman----40--black---farm laborer---born in GA----can't read
or write
       Rebecca Thurman----35---black-----farm laborer---born in GA---can't
read or write
       Dilsie Thurman---4---black---born in GA
       Gracie Willis-----60---black--keeps house-----born in GA---can't read

       Miles Dunn----15---black----farm laborer----born in GA---can't read or

       ROSE DUTTON-----50----black----domestic servant---born in GA---can't

Next door to this house, all the people are listed as whites.
       James H. Cowart------56------farmer----$14, 800.00-----born in GA
       Rebecca Cowart------55-----keeps house-----born in GA
       Zachariah Cowart----31-------farm laborer----born in GA

       Robert H. Cowart---23------farm laborer----born in GA

       Henson B. Newsom----18----attending school-----born in GA
       Paulina Newsom-------20------at home-----born in GA
       HANNAH DUTTON----92-----white----born ??????
The Rebecca Cowart above was a Rebecca Dutton. I remember finding the
marriage
because I thought that it might be my Rebecca. Susie, don't know what to
think about this. This Wiley J. could be Patrick's son. His uncle in Conway
County, AR
is also Wiley J. Dutton. There is too much of a coincidence here. And also
the name of Rebecca. Wish that I could have gotten all the 1860 Ga census, at
least
seen the index book. Hannah Dutton must be Rebecca Dutton Cowarts mother.
Will send the info from other states tomorrow. I think I need to go to
Nashville
to try to follow TN Duttons now.
Artie
