Just some information I found on the way to looking something else up.

William Ford, aged 12, bound to Zachariah Dutton Aug 5, 1818.

Granville Co, N.C.Court minutes 1803-1806
Achild about 10 or 12 years brought into the county by Edwin Lanier and
Elizabeth Williford was left there by them and now, child named Nancy
Anderson, is bound to Zachariah Dutton until Elizabeth Williford appears as
demanded.

This sounds like Indentured Servants (White Slavery) to me.
