In an earlier e-mail, Joseph asked about Mary Irwin's parents (as in Mary
Irwin b. ca 1807 in Cumberland Co. KY (now Clinton Co.), who married James
Dutton of Walker Co., son of John Dutton, grandson of Zach, Sr.) She was the
daughter of William Irwin, Sr. and Elizabeth Forester. William Irwin Sr. was
born 1775/1781 in Cumberland Co. PA, the son of John Irwin, a Revolutionary
War soldier who fought the British at Trenton and grandson of William Irwin
of Ireland who emigrated to Cumberland Co.PA and died there. William Irwin,
Sr. migrated to Clinton County (formerly Cumberland Co.) PA and married
Elizabeth Forester, (born ca 1888 in Tennessee, - d. 15 Nov 1844 in Walker
Co. AL). She was the daughter of Robert Forester, a Revolutionary War
soldier from Virginia whose pension application records his once delivering a
sealed letter to Gov. Patrick Henry.
William, Sr. and Elizabeth IRWIN settled in Stockton's Valley in
Cumberland (now Clinton) Co. KY where the first of their children were born.
Children born after 1820 were born in Lawrence Co. AL. While in KY, William
Irwin Sr. fought in the War of 1812 and was in the battle across Lake Erie in
Canada in which the great Indian Chief Tecumseh was killed. He is found in
the 1820 Lawrence Co. AL U.S. census and in the 1840 census at age 70-80.
Later he migrated to Walker Co. where his wife, Elizabeth died. His son
William, Jr. was living in Walker Co. sometime before 1845.
William Irwin, Sr. died in Clark County, Arkansas on 14 Nov. 1849,
the first of nine to die in a party of families traveling together migrating
to Texas. They died of cholera. His son William, Jr. and three of his
children also died in Clark Co. AR of cholera, but his wife Susan Ann
(Herring) and daughter, Martha Jane Irwin, survived their bouts with the
disease and returned to Morgan Co., AL to the home of Susan Ann's father,
Joseph Herring, where in 1850 the youngest child Susan W. Irwin was born,
some months after the death of her father. Martha Jane Irwin later married
James A. Lollar and they reared a family in Walker Co. where Susan Ann is
found in their household in the 1870 census of Walker Co. She along with
Martha and James Lollar are buried at Dutton HIll Cemetery, Walker Co. AL.
